Rev. Obed Jenkins was born on July 21, 1812 to Cissy Jenkins and Cooter Jenkins. He was born in Sheldyville, Maddocha. Obed Jenkins came to Absanie in 1830. He was ordained as a minister in 1829 at the age of 17. He was a fiery and energetic preacher, who preached against the vices of the devil and in the importance of attending a church. He caught the attention of Allen Wright while preaching at a revival in the city of Dorinda. Allen Wright wanted to start a church in Absanie. Mr. Wright talked to Rev. Jenkins about starting the church. Rev. Jenkins refused at first, stating that he was too young. Mr. Wright continued to try to find a minister to start the church in Absanie, but without much success. Mr. Wright kept coming back to Rev. Jenkins. In 1832, Rev. Jenkins accepted the charge to start the Absanie Baptist Church. Rev. Jenkins was a successful pastor. He married Anna Jacobs in 1830. They had seven children. There children were George Jenkins (1850), Miriam Jenkins-Asbury (1852), Tatum Jenkins (1853), Freda Jenkins-Griffin (1855), Enoch Jenkins (1857), Catherine Jenkins-Mosier (1858), and Charles Jenkins (1858). Three of Rev. Obed Jenkins descendants serve as leaders at Absanie Baptist Church. They are the former pastor, Dr. Donovan Jenkins, our current pastor, Rev. Donovan K. Jenkins, and Professor Ike Jenkins, the Minister of Music. Descendants of Rev. Obed Jenkins
